Los Arquillos Promenade, designed by Justo Antonio de Olaguibel, arquitect born in the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, was built between 1787 and 1802 forming a beautiful Nneoclassical boulevard of colonnades and balconies, an outstanding work of architecture classified as Historical-Artistic Monument since 1984.
It is set in the heart of the capital of Alava and was constructed to link the historical quarter of the city with the town's new part. It consists of two main sections: the first one extends over Cuesta de San Francisco and the second block is located under the church of San Miguel.
Los Arquillos Promenade and Plaza Nueva (New Square) are also the result of the first modern enlargement of Vitoria-Gasteiz to solve the problem of the medieval town's unevenness.
