Church of Santa María (Ondarroa)

The church of Santa Maria was built on a big rock and remains solemn in the village's old part.

It was built in 1462 in Gothic style, and restored in the 18th and 19th centuries. The temple has flamboyant tracery windows, and also outstanding are the pinnacles and the rose window. On the river bank, if we look up we will be able to appreciate the large arches under the church, used in the past to protect boats. Its most curious elements are located over the church, the so called "Kortxeleko mamuak".

They are Burgundy-style statues that represent a medieval court. Beside them the visitor will find "Leokadi". Legend has it that this woman lived in the old part of the town and turned into stone as a punishment. During the saint patron's festivities, the fiestas of the village, she comes down from the church to enjoy the party.
