The museum vessel Mater wins the ATRAE 2021 award

The last wooden Basque tuna boat won this accolade for its environmental work

The association of Basque inbound tourist agencies  chose the environmental activist ship Mater of Pasaia because of the work it does to get society involved in the care and protection of nature and the marine environment.

This accolade is awarded to organisations and people who help to make the Basque autonomous region an attractive holiday destination. This fourth edition of Atrae awards was held under the slogan Juntos Atraemos Más (Together We Attract More), emphasising that inbound tourism was the most affected by the pandemic.

The museum vessel Mater is the last big wooden-built tuna boat in the Basque Country, having fished anchovies, mackerel, sardines and bonito for 13 years. Today it is based in Pasaia bay and has become an authentic piece of living maritime heritage. It also runs a packed programme of activities with the aim of publicising and conserving the maritime environment of Pasaia-Jaizkibel-Ulia.
