One hour on the motorway from Bilbao going towards France, we find Donostia (as it is known in the Basque language), the capital of the province of Gipuzkoa. It is one of the coastline´s most beautiful cities and has equally beautiful beaches, such as La Concha. A modern, elegant, cosmopolitan city, known above all for its cuisine and the San Sebastian Film Festival.
Another attraction is the city´s closeness to France, which is only 50kms away and has its own beaches that are also ideal for surfing.
Speaking of which, in Donostia there are a lot of waves all year long on Zurriola Beach, in the neighbourhood of Gros, with major surf clubs and surf schools. It is ideal both for complete beginners and for experienced surfing enthusiasts.
There is a huge variety of cultural and leisure facilities. Nothing beats walking along the coast on sunny days, enjoying the sea, the shops, the terraces and the congress centres such as the Kursaal (whose symbol is well known as it is where the famous film festival is held), until you reach the Boulevard and the Old Quarter, which the residents of Donostia call “lo Viejo”. There, the full meaning of the word “pintxo” becomes clear, as in Donostia they are experts at this renowned form of miniature cuisine, which has so often received awards and is renowned the world over. A small, irresistible luxury.
