From Bizkaia to Gipuzkoa, following the A8 motorway, we will come across the coastal towns of Deba, Zumaia, Getaria, Zarautz, and Orio, in that order.
The sea is incredibly important in these small miunicipalities. There is Zumaia – ideal for bodyboarding – and the Flysch Cliffs, unique in the world due to their special features and their geological value. There are the spectacular remains of an ancient meteorite which can be viewed from a boat provided for didactic excursions. The interpretation centre of Algorri can also be visited.
While Itzurun Beach disappears at high tide, in very stormy weather world-famous waves such as Playa Gris and Orrua make their appearance. These waves are monstrously huge and powerful, and share the stage with the neighbouring municipality of Getaria, an area of great beauty and splendid gastronomy. Fish dishes are of special importance here.
Bordering on Getaria is the municipality of Zarautz, fifteen minutes away from San Sebastián and with a population that grows notably in summer, as it is the most important summer holiday destination on Gipuzkoa´s coast and a favourite among foreign tourists. There are numerous and varied options here. Surfing is at the forefront, as it has the greatest surfing tradition in the province and is one of the birthplaces of Basque surfing. It has produced talented surfers like Aritz Aranburu, the only Basque surfer (and one of the few Europeans) to have reached the world´s elite: the World Championship Tour, reserved for the world´s top 45 surfers.
It has seafront facilites. Its beach, the longest on the Basque coast, is almost 3 kms long.
After Zarautz, we find the village of Orio, which faces the sea and whose growth of recent years is noticeable from the road.
We soon reach the capital of the province of Gipuzkoa and one of the most beautiful cities in the country: Donostia – San Sebastian.
