The Basque Country has more than 200kms. of coastline full of sand banks, beaches and waves. Most provide optimum conditions for surfing. The reason is simple: among the thirty or so spots, there are sandy sea bottoms and rocky sea floors, beaches open to the sea or others which are more closed in and protected from the wind, and waves for everyone from experts to beginners.

There are also spots like Sopelana, Zarautz and Donostia that attract the crowds. Or quieter, wilder spots, like Meñakoz, Barrika, and those on the road between Zumaia and Getaria. In addition, there are the big wave spots like Punta Galea and Orrua, and other world-famous ones like the eternal Mundaka or Playa Gris, the latter having been the scenario for great feats of extreme surfing.

The coast includes the provinces of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, which are easy to reach by land, sea, or air. The border with France is only a few kilometres to the east, and the Autonomous Community of Cantabria is at a similar distance to the west. London is an hour-and-a-half away by air, or a day and a half away on the ferry.

The Basque Country is a welcoming place, renowned for its cuisine and its beautiful scenery, a perfect combination of sea and mountain. With its mild continental climate it offers numerous leisure options. It is also a major surfing power, a reference point both in Europe and all over the world. This small stretch of coast holds 50 surf contests a year, several of them top world - class events.

This is due, among other things, to the quality of our waves, and the dozen Basque surfers occupying top positions in international rankings. Several major multinationals working in this sector have their headquarters in the Basque Country, which has been exporting the best in surfing for 30 years.
